Workshop: Biological Control of Invasives- Goats!
Date: August 21st
Time: 10 AM- Noon
Location: 2710 VT-30, Rupert VT 05776
Join us at Sykes Hollow Land and Livestock to learn from farmers Ken Leach and Joanne Chickering about how they utilize biological control methods to manage invasive species, such as Japanese knotweed and multiflora rose, using goats.
Biological control is an integrated strategy for controlling undesirable species by deploying natural predators, parasites, pathogens, or, in this case, goats to effectively outcompete troublesome target species without the use of heavy machinery or herbicides.
What can you hope to learn?
This event will showcase field-tested invasive species management techniques developed by Ken and Joanne, demonstrating how these methods can be effectively applied across various land use types in Vermont and beyond. Participants will gain insight into available cost-share programs that can support landowners in implementing these practices. Additionally, Technical Service Providers will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the mechanics and logistics of using biological control, enabling them to develop more informed and effective conservation plans that incorporate this practice.
Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for a wide range of individuals involved in land and vegetation management. Technical Service Providers and conservation planners will gain valuable insights into incorporating biological control into conservation plans. Municipal planners and town crew managers responsible for roadside maintenance and invasive species control will learn practical strategies for improving outcomes on public infrastructure. Private landowners will discover effective, field-tested methods for managing invasives on their properties. The event is also a great fit for aspiring or current goat herders interested in offering targeted grazing services to landowners, providing a deeper understanding of the logistics, benefits, and opportunities associated with this ecological management approach.
