Veterans deserve opportunites to thrive.
Here at The Bennington County Conservation District (BCCD), we are working to create spaces where veterans can build skills and enjoy the benefits of purposeful work. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Census, roughly 11% of U.S. agricultural producers (over 370,000 individuals) have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces. These veterans operate 17% of all U.S. farms, managing more than 129 million acres and generating $41 billion in agricultural sales nationwide.
Evidence shows that veterans who participate in community agricultural initiatives experience measurable improvements in physical and mental health, including better sleep, nutrition and exercise, as well as decreases in anxiety, pain, depression, and substance use.
Agriculture is a natural fit for many veterans.
Transitioning from military to civilian life is challenging. Farming provides a sense of purpose, structure, and mission-driven work that resonates with military experience. The Bennington Veteran Incubator Farm supports this transition by providing resources, hands-on training, mentorship, and community for veterans pursuing agricultural careers. Engaging in farming gives veterans a sense of purpose, structure, and accomplishment, all while producing tangible benefits for the local community.
The Bennington Veteran Incubator Farm is more than a farm...
...it's a model for how communities can honor and empower those who have served. The 12-acre site already features composting systems, tree nurseries, high tunnels, orchards, and more. Veterans manage the farm in collaboration with volunteers and the BCCD, producing food that nourishes the Veterans’ Home and supporting other local institutions with fresh, healthy produce.
