Cover cropping is the practice of planting grasses, legumes, and/or other forbs as seasonal vegetative cover.

This practice has many benefits, including:
  • Reduce sheet, rill, and wind erosion.
  • Maintain or increase soil organic matter.
  • Improve soil aggregate stability.
  • Improve habitat for soil organisms.
  • Reduce water quality degradation by utilizing excess soil nutrients.
  • Reduce weed and plant pest pressure.
  • Improve moisture management.
  • Reduce soil compaction.
  • Supply nitrogen to the subsequent crop.
  • Improve habitat for pollinators, beneficial organisms, or natural enemies of crop pests.
This workshop will cover:
  • Establishing cover crops as part of a rotational cropping system.
  • Interseeding into production crops or planting in the alleyways of perennial trees or vine crops.
  • Plant species selection, seedbed preparation, seeding rates, seeding dates, seeding depths, fertility requirements, and planting methods
  • Determining the method and timing of termination.

We are happy to be able to award 3.0 hours of Water Quality Training Credits for CSFO, MFO and LFO operators, and Certified Custom Manure Applicators and Nutrient Management Technical Service Providers.
