Small Scale Cover Cropping Workshop

Cover cropping is the practice of planting grasses, legumes, and/or other forbs as seasonal vegetative cover.
This practice has many benefits, including:
- Reduce sheet, rill, and wind erosion.
- Maintain or increase soil organic matter.
- Improve soil aggregate stability.
- Improve habitat for soil organisms.
- Reduce water quality degradation by utilizing excess soil nutrients.
- Reduce weed and plant pest pressure.
- Improve moisture management.
- Reduce soil compaction.
- Supply nitrogen to the subsequent crop.
- Improve habitat for pollinators, beneficial organisms, or natural enemies of crop pests.
This workshop will cover:
- Establishing cover crops as part of a rotational cropping system.
- Interseeding into production crops or planting in the alleyways of perennial trees or vine crops.
- Plant species selection, seedbed preparation, seeding rates, seeding dates, seeding depths, fertility requirements, and planting methods
- Determining the method and timing of termination.
