Logging and Forestry

This page has been designed for the passing of information from past generations to the future.  Working with the Bennington Conservation District, the 11 AP English and AP U.S. History classes went out into the public to gather information from people as an oral history of Vermont.  This oral history deals with the ways people used and lived off of the land throughout Vermont's history.

Our project focused on the forestry industry and how people have dealt with the forest.  We interviewed two foresters, each with businesses of their own.  Claude Dern represents the more historical part of Vermont forestry with a great insight on what the future may bring. He helped us understand the reasons for certain evasive species that have taken over and also why some species have been depleting. Bob Kobelia, on the other hand, represents the more modern parts of Vermont forestry with his business Northeast Wood Products. Bob helped us understand the business associated with Vermont forestry and the woods that are manufactured in his saw mill. Both of these foresters were ready and willing to help us out with this oral history of Vermont. We give thanks to them for taking the time to lend us some crucial information about Vermont's landscape.
