Henry strohmaier

Henry Strohmaier is a dairy farmer that has been farming on his farm in Pownal since 1962.  In the interview, he focused on the history of his farm and how a modern dairy farm is run.  The farms were started in 1929 by his father and uncle, and in 1962 he and his brother bought out his uncle and ran the farm with their father.  At the time he started, the operation was milking around 20-24 cows.  Over the years the operation has expanded, now milking roughly 195 cows.  Henry attributed this expansion not only to the development of newer technology that made milking cows easier, but also to the need to expand in order to survive in a competitive market.  He has land throughout Southwestern Vermont, including farms on Strohmaier Road, upper East Road, and crop land on Whipstock Road- roughly 1000-1200 acres.

The Strohmaier Farms have seen a number of technological advancements over the years.  In the video below, Mr. Strohmaier elaborates on what advancements have been made and how they have impacted his farm.
