Working Land

Laurie and Debbie Johnson run their own farm here in Shaftsbury. Their family bought their farm in 1948 and since then the farm has undergone many phases. It started as a chicken farm, moved on to horse breeding, and is now primarily a beef farm. They still breed and raise Morgan horses, as well as keep chickens but not on a large scale. They maintain the land as a workable resource, they do so by rotating their pastures and alternating crops throughout their fields. In doing this they are able to support their cattle and horses as well as keep the land open and productive.

We spoke with the Johnsons about the story of their farm and the methods they use to maintain it today. Here is a summary of what we learned.
This is a link to the pictures we took of the Johnson's farm and the animals they keep there.
Here is our research on certain methods of farming, and what it takes to raise animals.
