Maple Sugaring

For hundreds of years people have used maple sugaring as a form of living off of the land in Vermont. Maple sugaring has progressed from the primitive ways of the Native Americans to the more modern, technologically advanced production of syrup. Our project is based on the progression of sugaring throughout the past years in Bennington county. We interviewed the knowledgeable sugar makers Keith Armstrong of Pownal, VT and Rick Kobik who resides in Shaftsbury. Keith Armstrong offered a perspective on both the changes of the land over time, the effects of the modern conveniences and the present threats maple producers face. Rick Kobik shared his knowledge of the progression of spouts over time and specifically how the equipment functions. The combination of these interviews gave us compilation of knowledge that we are able to share with the community in the form of a website.
