Keith Armstrong

Keith Armstrong owns agricultural land in both Bennington, off of Bridge Rd. and off of Pownal Rd, on U.S. 7. He not only produces a large quantity of maple syrup, but farms and sells his products locally at his residence in Pownal. Like many local sugar makers, Keith Armstrong learned sugar making from a man named Colonel Ayres, who sugared in Shaftsbury, VT and is well known for inventing the syrup hydrometer. He also sugared with his father when he was young, first using several buckets, tapping 7 or 8 trees with a sumac spout, and boiling outside with an open pan. Armstrong sugared with his father but, did enter the business commercially until 1975. Armstrong and some locals each invested about 1500 dollars in equipment to jump start the business. His hobby has grown quite a bit since 1975 and he now taps about 3,000 trees within his property on Pownal Rd.. He now has a greater appreciation for the land as he has put his 83 acres of farmland on Bridge Rd. under a Vermont Land Trust. The Land Trust will preserve the grounds only as agricultural land for future generations.  He is grateful for all that his land has given him and says, "I try to take care of my maple trees because in a way they take care of me so, I better take care of them."
